Why I buy handmade...A review

With our hands in 100543234234 things this summer and the attention of mom and dad split a few more ways than usual, it is SO important to us to set time aside for fun.

We play with friends, we go to the splash pad and we most definitely have our afternoons of wild and crazy play time.

Balancing family, entrepreneurship and community outreach has been one of the biggest challenges I've ever faced. It helps so greatly that I am a part of an amazing community of mom-owned businesses who also walk the tightrope of business-owner and mama. As a multi-business owning mama I can truly vouch for those little memes that say things like "buying local means paying for a little girls ballet classes" Every dollar earned from House of J goes towards our children and back into our community- supporting local as much as we possibly can.

With new articles out there everyday on corruption from big name stores, child labor and unfair wages for workers, it seems like the only safe bet is to purchase clothing from small batch, local artisans who produce their clothing by hand or in US garment facilities only. While this can sometimes be pricier, the reward is so much greater.

Sweetpea Mcgee is a brand-new Facebook based children's clothing boutique that offers beautiful hand made pieces in very limited quantities. The quality and durability is immaculate and my 4 year old is just the preschooler to test it out! J is tough on her clothes and when she falls in love with a new dress, that's the dress she wears...and wears...and wears...and WEARS!

Because buying local and preferably MOM made, is so important to me (and YOU!) I asked Kashara, owner of Sweetpea McGee a few questions about WHY she chooses to balance work and being a full time mama

House Of J:  I've seen you make your daughter beautiful dresses forever, what made you decide to start selling your creations?

Sweetpea McGee: I decided to start selling on facebook because my children are young and this way I can share my creative passion and creations with others while still enjoying their fast childhood years. I can control the flow of how many items I create per month and how many items I put up for sale. That way I can still do school volunteering, field trips, tiny tots classes and household necessities with a good balance for everything.

House Of J: why do you choose the fabric you choose

Sweetpea McGee: Why do I choose the fabric I do is such a tough question. I am drawn to so many fabrics because of their beautiful colors and composition. I see fabrics that I love and I try bring out their beauty as best as possible by pairing it with the best pattern to make it all shine. I have multiple nieces and a daughter and I truly try to put myself in their shoes. It really takes me into such a fun and creative mind frame..oh to be a child again.

House Of J: What is your design inspiration?

Sweetpea McGee: My inspiration or my driving force to continue doing what I love is basically the smiles and happy faces I see every time I receive a photo from a customer saying "Thank you!" I really have more creations in my head than I can ever create with my time but I truly am passionate about delivering a product that will send a little one over the moon with happiness.

And She's done just that! Sent my little one- Over the moon in twirling-whirling dress happiness!

Summer Snack Picks & House Of J Updates.

While I sometimes wish I lived a completely Zen life style, "Busy" seems to be our middle name lately. It's been insanely quiet on the House Of J blog lately. With family, our businesses, community outreach and of course my little darlings, I just haven't had a chance to "blog". But I miss it, and will try to make updating a higher priority.

If you're interested in guest blogging for House Of J with healthy family recipes shoot me an email :)

In the mean time- check out a few of my blogger "it" lists.

www.whimsicallydetailed.com- One of my faves- party posts, gorgeous kids clothes and much much more.

www.danisuedreams.com- Local Fort Collins mama who is passionate about community outreach, custom jewelry and so much more.

http://fitfoodiemom.com- A lady after my own heart, healthy living, great recipes, and lots more! She even featured a House Of J favorite here- http://fitfoodiemom.com/2014/02/25/cauliflower-pizza-crust-house-of-j-recipe/

Summer time is here and that means picnics, fun in the sun and being on the run. Activities can keep us moms so busy that we end up at the drive thru for coffee and if you are anything like me, give in to an almond milk chocolate milk for the kiddos every once in a while. But chocolate milk (even with almonds) is not very nutritious, so what is a busy mama with a car full of snacking littles supposed to do?

I find that sticking to organic and non-gmo goodies on the go is the hardest.
#1 they are SO expensive, especially feeding a very hungry 2 year old and a growing 4.
#2 you have to watch out or there is as much processed junk in there as non-organic snack foods

I was recently sent a DELICIOUS pack of Ladera granola- It was delicious, with really great ingredients and my kiddos ate it up, I think the entire bag lasted us about 3 days.

My kids love yogurt but with the greek yogurt controversies  and the sky rocketing prices of dairy, I can honestly say that the yogurt is optional.

Their ingredients are California grown and they are a small business company that prides themselves on wholesome ingredients.

Check out their website and order a bag or two, or three :)

Another snack of choice is my supreme go-to because guess what-- the HUBBY loves them! YEP! Total family score, The vanilla-raspberry is AHHH-mazing and so are all the other flavors. I even made a CAKE out of my Natures Bakery Fig Bars. And my local Costco has them, which is a huge savings.

Keeping your family safe, one app at a time

When I heard about REACT mobile my first thought was WOW I know so many families who could benefit from this iphone and android app! My little ones are still too small for me to track them with it but I know that any growing family could use an easier way to keep track of their kiddos and themselves. I can't tell you how many times I felt compromised living in a heavily populated metropolitan area. REACT would have definitely helped me to feel more secure. Feeling safe is such a big part of being a mother.

Did I mention that it's free!?

React Mobile  helps you turn your smartphone into a powerful lifeline for your family. The app has a “Follow Me” feature, that let’s your self selected contacts track your whereabouts in real-time whenever you’re concerned for your safety.

Perfect for running or walking alone early in the morning or late at night, keeping track of kids, or meeting a client for the first time, simply touch the “I’m Safe” button to let your contacts know when you’ve arrived at your destination safely. In an emergency, press the SOS shield on the app to send out a panic alert containing a link to your GPS location to select emergency contacts via text message and email, which can optionally be posted to Facebook and Twitter. Once the SOS alert is activated, you’re automatically prompted to dial 911.

This app allows you to choose which country you live in (or are traveling to) from the settings tab and when an SOS alert is triggered, you will be prompted to dial the appropriate emergency authority depending on you’re geographic location.

Check out the video demo & download your copy!

· React Mobile Web site: www.ReactMobile.com
· Google Play Download (available on select smartphones): https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.reactmobile.lite

· React App Demo Video: http://vimeo.com/61927390

The Founder of REACT mobile shares his story:

Can you explain your inspiration for creating this app? What exactly happened to you?
I’ve personally been the victim of a hostage situation while I was a college student and saw the need for a product that could be used to silently and discreetly alert the authorities and your trusted contacts if you are in trouble.  When we first came up with the idea behind React Mobile, we wanted to develop a tool to improve safety on university campuses. What we noticed is that institutions are actively installing and maintaining blue light emergency phones which help to create the perception of safety on campuses. Although these blue light emergency phones can be useful, they are very expensive to install ($7K - $10K on average) and maintaining these phones costs upwards of $60k per year. Furthermore, usage rates are low and these phones are typically used for crank calls pestering police and security officers. While there is no doubt that these blue light emergency phones serve a purpose, we wanted to develop technology that puts the power of an emergency blue light phone in the palm of every students’ hand, thus, arming individuals with a more effective safety tool that can be used on and off campus.
Since our launch we’ve found other markets beyond schools that can benefit from our app’s capabilities, and we’ve been gaining traction with parents, solo runners, travelers and lone workers.

Preschool Lunch Ideas and Organization with help from Sistema Plastics

Oh plastics....

One of life's many conveniences that are toxic to us and hard on our environment. But it's just too hard to give up, for now.

I am relatively new to avoiding BPA and we do try to avoid it as best we can. Especially in long term food storage.

All of this of course becomes even more substantial now that lil girl is in preschool this year! I've been trying to keep her lunchboxes interesting, fun, healthy and exciting.

She isn't the best eater and usually will have a better lunch if something is shaped like a flower, or a man or a tree, even a butterfly. Or in this case, A little man with carrot eyes and mouth!

I knew that because I have a "snacker" and not a foodie on my hands, I needed a BPA free, inexpensive version of a bento box.

This was lil girl's most recent preschool lunch. Sandwhich buddy and yogurt in the large bottom compartment, Apple slices and grapes in the top side compartment, cucumbers in the other and some Annie's chocolate bunnies in the smaller compartment. And guess what, it came home EMPTY! Victory!!

I've been purchasing food storage containers from Sistema since my first real apartment, 8+ years ago.
It keeps food fresh, is priced super reasonably and is very high quality.

Did I mention it goes in the dishwasher safely and comes out sparkling clean?

Because I always have so many ingredients on hand at any given time, even 20 cabinets wouldn't be enough. Things get piled high and I dig around for 15 minutes sometimes looking for the baking powder.

I am so embarassed to show you my cabinets before and after but here goes!

It was pretty much just boxes on top of bags on top of mason jars. I try to keep it as neat as I can but life gets away from you sometimes and you end up with that kind of mess.

Now check it out--

Between my combination of mason jars, tin buckets (targets $1 section) and beautiful Sistema containers, My cabinet is pretty much as neat as its going to get. You can see that most of the bags are now in my new Sistema baker's line(white) and my gluten free pasta, rices and other goodies are in the klip-it line(blue).

Did I mention this closet is right front and center of my dining room? And that the kids leave the door open ALL the time?

Sistema Plastics is one of the few brands that I feel comfortable reviewing and recommending to my beloved readers. With their BPA free materials, sustainable business practices and all around reasonable pricing. The House Of J family will definitely be buying more and more!

I'd love for you to check them out @ www.sistemaplastics.com and read there awesome story. Basically their company went from a small business, operating in someones garage in New Zealand. With what is now a huge factory warehouse, full staff and available at most of my favorite stores.

Roasted Peach Iced Chai

I know I've been on a preachy kick lately about GM ingredients but it is a really important issue to me. My Facebook friends must be so sick of my horror story GMO posts but I just want to keep spreading the word and make my family, friends and readers all aware of whats going on with our food these days.

I've had a super busy season so far. Between the little munchkins, everyday housewife duties and running my small business,I've just been swamped. I was asked to try out some goodies that were organic and GM free and thank goodness I did because they were such a life saver during such a hectic few weeks. I've posted before on my love of Chai tea but the one Davidson's sent me was out of this world! I roasted some fresh organic peaches with a little cane sugar and blended my tea with some roasted peach puree.

Chai is usually super high in caffeine so a caffeine free version was just what I needed. I LOVE LOVE LOVE chai. but after a morning coffee and an afternoon protein smoothie, sometimes you can feel like you are on caffeine overload. I am thrilled I can now have some afternoon Chai without the caffeine!

I was also sent some AMAZING GM-Free fig bars in a bunch of flavors. My favorite by far was the vanilla, but the blueberry was delicious also. This is a healthy treat that I feel comfortable feeding my 3 year old. And they were such a life saver to have in the diaper bag for myself & my hubby on the run.

They were also dairy free for those of us who are intolerant or are nursing dairy sensitive kiddos..My one recommendation to Nature's Bakery is to remove the caramel color. I think us mama's are ok with  a fig bar not being visually appealing if that means there are less additives and unnecessary ingredients for our families.
I've even seen these guys at Costco! If you are a member and can get the box of these yummies at a bulk price I wouldn't pass it up.

For an on the run, yummy dessert like treat with half the calories, sugar and preservatives as your leading grocery store "healthy bars" natures bakery for sure takes the cake.. Or should I say fig!

Recipe For Roasted Peach Iced Chai

4 fresh organic peaches quartered
1/4 cup pure cane sugar
5 bags of Davidson's Organic Spiced Chai
1 qt boiling water
1 qt cold water
lots and lots of ice!

Cut peaches in half and then in half again and sprinkle with sugar
In a 415 degree oven roast your peaches for 20-30 minutes or until the tops are carmelized and gooey and they slide right off the skin with a fork.

Steep your tea bags in boiling water for 8 minutes (I find this is the perfect strength for iced)

Puree your peaches with an emulsion blender, food processor  and then strain any of the larger pieces out.

Add puree too your cold water and then pour the brewed tea right over.

Add ice to your pitcher and enjoy!!!

House Of J got PEGGED!

My little munchkins double birthday is around the corner. I AM SO EXCITED!

To commemorate Earth Day, being green, sustainable and all around carbon foot print reduction, we've been doing our best to accumulate party supplies that are better for Mother Earth.

We'll be doing wooden utensils and paper straws and the adorable toppers for our cake will not be made of plastic.

They will be these amazing little wooden dolls that my little ones will get to play with for many years to come.

My new friend Marie over at Pegged By Grace created this sweet little trio for our cake! Woody, Jesse and Buzz.. My Daughter has NO IDEA!

I've been keeping them hidden for awhile now and luckily it's been easier because I was also sent a little Batman peg(yes my daughter loves batman) to keep her little paws off the ones for her cake!

She's been walking around with her little Batman for a few weeks and just loves to hold him and make him talk to her little brother. The detail is just amazing. I cannot rave enough about how special the hand painting is on every doll. Her little Batman has been bitten on,dropped, stepped on, and just all around beat up... She is going to be 3 after all. and Toddlers are hard on their toys. There is not a chip on a scratch on him! Super hero of SUPER high quality.

Wooden toys are so popular right now. From instruments to pull along toys. They are everywhere. What I love so much about these little peg dolls is that they will be on their birthday cake to honor their first ever combination party and then be reused over and over again as play things.

They are hand painted so detailed that even Jesse's braid is spot on!

PEGGED by Grace also does completely custom orders. When I asked what she loved most about her work she said that she loves when a family orders a custom peg family to look like your favorite family photo! How special would that be, a peg doll collection of your loved ones.

Please show another fellow momma owned and operated small business some love and support by liking her face book page, checking out her shop and spreading the word!

Check her out here :)

Organic Country Gravy

I used to LOVE using bouillon to season gravies, soups and anything else I could think of...until I realized that there was a plethora of disturbing chemicals inside. I've actually discontinued using it until I stumbled upon Gobio Organics.

I was so excited when Gobio Organics sent me a generous little sample of some of their cubes. Everything about them is different, the color is more natural there is no artificial ingredients or color.

The flavor was way more intense as well. Check out their ingredient list!

Ingredients: Sea Salt, Corn Starch*, Yeast Extract, Non-Hydrogenated Palm Oil*, Chicken Fat*, Dehydrated Chicken Powder*, Celery*, Onions*, Lovage*, Parsley*, Garlic*, Turmeric*, Pepper*, Natural Rosemary Flavourig.
*certified organic

Gluten-Free
 √ Organic Free-Range Chicken

The flavor was so intense that I barely had to season my gravy. Just a bit of lemon pepper seasoning was a perfect addition.

I always use a mix of beef both and chicken in my gravies for a well rounded flavor.
For my country gravy you need:

1 Chicken Bouillon Cube (GoBIOfood.com)
1/2 cup water
1 Cup Beef Broth
2 Tablespoons Butter
1 Tablespoon lemon pepper seasoning
2 Tablespoons GMO free flour

In a small sauce pan, melt your butter and add in flour. mix until it forms a paste and turns light yellow in color. Add in your beef broth and simmer until it starts to boil.

Break up a bullion cube in 1/2 cup warm water and slowly incorporate it to your gravy.
Season with lemon pepper!

SEE! it's so simple and easy, no chemicals from those gravy packets!

Enjoy with grilled pork chops, chicken, chicken fried steak, and especially my lightened up wheat biscuits..found here

Tropical Traditions Review & Giveaway!

Gold Label Virgin Coconut Oil - 32 oz.

House of J is featuring its first hosted giveaway for our wonderful Facebook Fans! Thank you to our sponsor TROPICAL TRADITIONS!

I know you guys are amazing bakers if you are reading my blog. :)

So you will appreciate this really delicious and healthy alternative and  its also GMO free which is a really huge concern for us here at House of J.Coconut oil has so many uses but my favorite way to use it is in delectable desserts.

I am new to all the wonders of coconut oil personally but I've made some really amazing treats.. Like the Dairy free vanilla cupcakes I've shared with you all. HERE.

Not all coconut oil is created equally and it does come with a hefty price tag but it is well worth it. Especially for my vegan and gluten free friends. The pure Virgin Coconut Oil is the way to go if you'd like a fun alternative to using butter or canola oil in your recipes.

Tropical Traditions is gifting one lucky House of J fan a jar to try! I am so excited to see what ideas you can come up with using coconut oil!

TheSpiceHouse.com-A Review

About a month before we found out we would be moving to Colorado I ordered a pantry stock full of spices from The Spice House.

They are based in Chicago but ship all over. My package arrived in about a week and half, a little long for me but the shipping was free. Worth the wait!

I hate paying for shipping.

I use A LOT of spices... If this isn't the first post you've read from House of J than you've seen the little baggies in my ingredient shots...

This is a great way to buy spices. A. you save money on having the glass jars sent to you and B. Eco friendly.

I do have my own spice jars, But I haven't gotten around to labeling them just yet. With the move and all.

One amazing product that I ordered from The Spice House was the Madagascar Vanilla Powder. AMAZING.
It is so versatile, I put a pinch in my coffee every single morning and it has made my deserts so much more rich in vanilla than your basic alcohol based extract.

I also ordered. Oregano, garlic powder, onion powder, cilantro, cocoa powder, espresso powder, parsley, sage and Chai powder.

Chai Powder...AWESOME...I made these adorable little tea cookies using this and some scraped vanilla beans. DELICIOUS

Every spice that I've ordered I've used, loved, and enjoyed. The Spice House did not contact me for this review, all the opinions are my own, and unsolicited :)

xox,
House of J

ThredUp.com- A Review

Let me start off by saying that I had intended to review this service when I first sent out my toddlers  clothes. I was so excited at the idea and really thought what a wonderful way to have someone else's munchkin get good use out of her things...I even took this picture of the bag filled to max capacity in preparation to write a POSITIVE review.

I was really excited...

Sorry to say that I am no longer excited, I am hysterical. I almost threw up when I received there email reviewing my merchandise..It seems as though they put the very basic, lower end goods up for sale on the site, paid me minimally-($12). And said that all the other goods were not fit to sell and that not only would they be keeping my stuff, but they aren't compensating me for it. I even offered to pay for the shipping so that my items could be returned to me at no additional fee to them. They still declined and vaguely said it would be "recycled".

They are very clear to send them top brands and items with tags...to steal?

DO SEND US
  • Clothing in new to like-new condition
items should be in pristine condition. Learn more about our high Quality Standards here.
  • Clothing that's freshly laundered
clothing should look and smell clean. Please wash and fully dry all clothing before placing it in the bag. Clothing that is still moist does not travel well in a sealed plastic bag
  • Top brands
such as Oiliy, Mini Boden, Tea Collection, Hanna Andersson, Guess, Ralph Lauren, Janie & Jack, Hanna Banana, Baby Lulu and Baby Nay
    NWT (new with tags) items
we pay more for items that are so new that they still include price tags - however, we do not guarantee we accept all NWT tag items, as they must still meet our standards and be free of imperfections

Check these pictures out, these are items I sent, that they deemed, unfit to sell. $80 Geox boots and $60 Geox sneakers, Merrell sneakers that were worn ONCE.. Jackets and Dresses...

This outfit was also sent- These are organic thread pants from a vegan store in Williamsburg, Bklyn.

Needless to say, I have been in tears since I they told me what they were going to "compensate" me for.

The site is a huge scam.. if you google reviews...everyone has the same complaint. expensive things with tags, not paid out.

In hindsight I should have went into the FAQ section of the site and read every single line. But I moved across the country with 2 babies, I read all the rules and all the guidelines. Nowhere on those areas of the site is their "sorry we keep your stuff and don't pay you" policy listed..

here is a link to more reviewers, they also have 30 complaints filed against them with BBB.com I will be number 31, unless another mommy beats me to it.

http://www.resellerratings.com/store/ThredUP

I don't care about the money specifically but any and every mommy out there knows that for some odd reason, your babies clothes are special to you, so when you feel that they were stolen from you, They could have instead been sitting in that bin in your basement for blissful memories.
